Frequently Asked & Question

The best time to visit Assam and Meghalaya is generally from October to May. Winter (October to February) offers pleasant weather, ideal for wildlife safaris in Kaziranga and sightseeing in Meghalaya. Spring (March to May) is also good, with blooming flowers, though temperatures start to rise. Monsoon season (June to September) sees heavy rainfall, especially in Meghalaya, which can cause travel disruptions but also makes the waterfalls magnificent. Kaziranga National Park is closed during the monsoon (typically June to October).

A comfortable tour covering the main highlights like Guwahati, Kaziranga, Shillong, Cherrapunji, and Mawlynnong typically requires 7 to 9 days. If you wish to explore more deeply, include places like Majuli Island in Assam or more remote parts of Meghalaya, plan for 10-14 days. Travel times between destinations can be long due to hilly terrain in Meghalaya.

For Indian citizens, generally no special permits are required to visit Assam and Meghalaya. However, some protected areas or border regions might have specific entry rules. Foreign nationals usually require a valid Indian visa. Some other states in Northeast India (like Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram) require Protected Area Permits (PAP) or Restricted Area Permits (RAP). Always check the latest regulations before traveling.

Pack comfortable clothing suitable for layering. Light woolens or jackets are needed for evenings and higher altitudes in Meghalaya, especially during winter. Carry rain gear (umbrella, raincoat) regardless of the season, as Meghalaya receives rain year-round. Comfortable walking shoes with good grip are essential, especially if you plan to trek to living root bridges or explore caves. Sunscreen and insect repellent are also advisable.

The trek to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge involves descending (and later ascending) around 3000-3500 steep steps. It requires a moderate level of fitness and can take 1.5-2 hours each way. The path is well-paved but can be slippery, especially during or after rain. It's a rewarding experience, but assess your fitness level before undertaking it. There are other single living root bridges (like in Mawlynnong) that are much more easily accessible.
