Frequently Asked & Question
The best time to visit the Andaman Islands is generally between October and May. During this period, the weather is pleasant with calm seas, making it ideal for beach activities, sightseeing, and water sports like snorkeling and diving. The monsoon season, from late May to September, brings heavy rains and rough seas, which can disrupt ferry services and outdoor activities.
Inter-island travel is primarily done by ferries. There are government-operated ferries and faster private cruises (like Makruzz, Green Ocean, Sea Link). Private cruises offer more comfort and are generally faster but cost more. Government ferries are more economical but may take longer and have basic amenities. Booking ferry tickets in advance, especially during peak season, is highly recommended.
Indian nationals do not require any permit to visit the main tourist islands like Port Blair, Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), and Neil (Shaheed Dweep). However, foreign nationals require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which is usually issued on arrival at the Port Blair airport free of cost. Permits might be needed for visiting certain tribal reserve areas or specific islands not typically on tourist circuits, which require prior approval.
Mobile connectivity can be patchy, especially outside Port Blair. BSNL is generally considered to have the widest coverage, followed by Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Data speeds are often slow (3G or sometimes 4G in limited areas). Wi-Fi is available in most hotels and resorts, but it might be slow and sometimes chargeable. Don't expect seamless high-speed internet across all islands.
Pack light cotton clothing suitable for tropical weather, swimwear, sunscreen (high SPF), sunglasses, a hat or cap, insect repellent, comfortable footwear (sandals, flip-flops), basic first-aid kit, and any personal medications. If you plan on water activities, consider bringing a waterproof bag or phone pouch. An underwater camera is great for capturing marine life. Carry valid photo ID proof.
