Bhutan: Where Happiness Meets Himalayan Majesty

  • Fully Customizable Packages

Welcome to Bhutan, the last great Himalayan kingdom, where ancient Buddhism thrives and happiness is measured in GNH (Gross National Happiness)! Journey with us through this mystical land where prayer flags flutter in crisp mountain air, and centuries-old dzongs (fortresses) stand guard over pristine valleys. Let us introduce you to a world where tradition and progress dance in perfect harmony.

Begin in Thimphu, the world's only capital without traffic lights, where monks chat on smartphones while walking past ancient temples. Visit the massive Buddha Dordenma statue overlooking the valley, and watch master craftspeople preserve traditional arts at the National Institute for Zorig Chusum. Experience the vibrant Weekend Market where locals trade in their colorful national dress - the gho for men and kira for women.

Journey to the historic Punakha valley, crossing the dramatic Dochula Pass adorned with 108 stupas. Here, marvel at the majestic Punakha Dzong, standing at the confluence of two rivers, and hike to the Temple of the Divine Madman with its unique fertility blessings. End your journey in Paro, hiking to the iconic Tiger's Nest Monastery clinging impossibly to a cliff face, a masterpiece of architecture and spirituality that will leave you breathless - both literally and figuratively!

Frequently Asked Questions

March to May offers beautiful spring blooms and pleasant hiking weather, while September to November brings clear skies perfect for mountain views. The Paro and Thimphu festivals (tshechus) are major highlights in spring and fall. Summer (June-August) sees some rain but gorgeous green landscapes, while winter (December-February) is cold but offers unique insights into Bhutanese life.

The hike takes 2-3 hours each way and is moderately challenging due to the altitude (3,120m). We take it at a comfortable pace with plenty of rest stops. There's a lovely cafeteria halfway up for refreshments. While good physical fitness helps, we've had travelers of all ages complete this rewarding journey. We can arrange alternative activities if you prefer not to do the full hike.

Pack layers! Temperatures vary greatly between day and night. Bring comfortable hiking shoes, modest clothing for monastery visits (shoulders and knees covered), and a good camera for those stunning mountain views. We provide a detailed packing list, but don't worry too much - Bhutanese hospitality ensures you'll be well taken care of, and traditional dress can even be rented for special occasions!

Bhutanese cuisine is a delightful adventure! Try ema datshi (chili cheese stew) - the national dish, red rice, and momos (dumplings). Vegetarians are well-catered for, though meals can be spicy. We'll guide you through local specialties and can always arrange milder options. Don't miss butter tea and ara (traditional rice wine) for an authentic taste of Bhutanese hospitality!

Most visitors adjust well to Bhutan's altitude, as we plan the itinerary to acclimatize gradually. Paro (2,200m) and Thimphu (2,350m) are at moderate elevations. We recommend taking it easy the first day, staying hydrated, and informing your guide if you feel unwell. Our guides are trained in altitude-related issues and carry first-aid kits. Traditional remedies like ginger tea also help!
